Tragedy in Damascus: IS Sleeper Cell Targets Churches

An Islamic State sleeper cell carried out a devastating church bombing near Damascus, with plans to target a Shiite shrine, according to Syria's Interior Ministry. The blast killed at least 25 people at Mar Elias church, marking a significant attack after years of relative calm.

Noureddine Al-Baba, the ministry's spokesperson, disclosed that security forces intercepted a second bomber en route to another target and disrupted a third attack. The capture of key suspects led them to crucial intelligence, including stockpiles of weapons and explosives.

The attack starkly underscores the sectarian challenges as Damascus, under Islamist rule, seeks minority support. Funerals were held for victims amid calls for religious harmony. Locals, traumatized by the violence, expressed fears for their safety but stressed the need for peaceful coexistence.
