Trinamool Congress MP Samirul Islam has brought attention to the plight of Bengali-speaking migrant workers facing citizenship verification issues in Odisha. He highlighted the rejection of centrally-issued identity documents, such as Aadhaar and EPIC, by Odisha authorities.
Islam revealed a letter from West Bengal Chief Secretary Manoj Pant to his Odisha counterpart, stressing the need to end the harassment of these migrants. Despite the West Bengal government's attempts to provide necessary verifications, including electoral rolls, Odisha police have continued to detain workers.
Appealing to Indian leaders, Islam questioned the additional documents required to prove citizenship, criticizing the ongoing detentions. He noted that Odisha migrants in West Bengal face no such hostility, thanks to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's commitment to diversity and harmony.
