Civil rights advocates have expressed outrage following a video that emerged from Jacksonville, Florida, depicting a Black man being assaulted by officers during a February traffic stop.
William McNeil Jr, 22, captured the incident on camera while in his car. The footage shows officers smashing his window, assaulting him, and forcibly removing him from the vehicle. The video quickly went viral, spurring calls for accountability from civil rights groups who dubbed it an instance of police brutality.
Reacting to the widespread attention, Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters urged the public to withhold judgment, citing ongoing reviews. Meanwhile, officer D. Bowers, identified as the one who broke the window, faced suspension of his law enforcement duties pending further investigation. McNeil has been charged with several offenses, including resisting arrest, while his legal representatives sustain that he was non-combative during the incident.
