The Karnataka State Women's Commission has called on the Bengaluru Police Commissioner to take decisive action against a surge of online abuse targeting women, including former MP and actress Ramya. This abuse allegedly stems from fans of Kannada actor Darshan Thoogudeepa posting derogatory content on social media.
The Commission highlighted that these derogatory messages severely impact the status of women. Consequently, they have urged the police to investigate, hold accountable those responsible, and ensure the removal of abusive content from social media platforms. Former MP Ramya is reportedly compiling evidence of such harassment to file an official complaint.
On July 27, Ramya shared several screenshots of abusive posts on her Instagram, attributing them to trolls with misogynistic attitudes. She emphasized the dangerous correlation between online harassment and more serious crimes, advocating for greater attention to this online menace. The incident also brings to light the aggressive social media behavior of Thoogudeepa's fanbase, known for staunchly defending the actor, who is currently on bail in a murder case.
