The Assam government launched a significant eviction drive on Tuesday, targeting illegal settlements on more than 3,600 acres of forest land in Golaghat district. The affected area, part of the Rengma Reserve Forest, lies along the Assam-Nagaland border.
The operation will impact at least 1,500 families who have received notices, Golaghat district administration and forest department officials confirmed. The eviction commenced at the Bidyapur area market, with plans to address residential encroachments.
Officials state that approximately 11,000 bighas of land were encroached upon, necessitating the demolition of illegal structures. The Muslim families being evicted are those without Forest Rights Committee certificates, which are possessed by some Bodo, Nepali, and other community members in the area.
