A heart-wrenching incident unfolded in Odisha's Mayurbhanj district when 26-year-old Bharati Patra and her companion Harishankar Acharya attempted self-immolation in an agricultural field.

The tragedy occurred in Khiching village, with eyewitnesses reporting that both individuals set themselves ablaze using petrol in front of Khiching College.

Bharati was pronounced dead upon arrival at Sukrili community health center, while Harishankar was moved to Keonjhar District Headquarters Hospital in a critical state. Police investigations are ongoing to uncover the reasons behind this grim situation, said Rairang police in-charge Anadi Charan Patayat.
