India-U.S. trade talks have failed after multiple rounds due to disagreements on farm sector policies and India's purchase of Russian oil. The Indian foreign ministry has criticized the U.S. for what it sees as unwarranted economic measures, pledging protective steps.
Despite the tensions with the U.S., India is exploring other alliances, with Modi planning a visit to China and engaging in discussions with the BRICS group spearheaded by Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
