On Monday, students gathered in Imphal West district to protest against illegal immigration across the Northeastern states of India.
Organized by the All Manipur Students Union with support from the North East Students Organisation (NESO), the protest saw placards calling for the National Register of Citizens (NRC) implementation, restructuring for resettlement of internally displaced individuals, and the formation of a review committee to tackle population growth concerns.
In a formal memorandum submitted to Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, NESO demanded urgent deportation of illegal immigrants, sealing of the India-Bangladesh border, and enhanced border monitoring. They also urged the authorities to resolve ongoing ethnic conflicts that have led to significant casualties and homelessness since May 2023.
