The Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), one of the country’s largest steelmakers, held its 53rd Annual General Meeting (AGM) at Chinmaya Mission, New Delhi, on 16 September 2025. The session, conducted on a virtual platform, was addressed by Chairman & Managing Director Shri Amarendu Prakash, who presented the company’s performance highlights, sustainability commitments, and future roadmap to shareholders.
Steel at the Core of India’s Growth Story
Opening his address, Shri Prakash underscored the symbolic importance of steel, calling it the “backbone of modern civilization – strong, resilient, and enduring.” He likened the resilience of steel to the journey of SAIL, which has grown stronger by facing challenges and adapting to changing times.
“SAIL stands tall as both a witness and a partner in India’s development journey towards Viksit Bharat 2047,” he affirmed. From infrastructure and railways to defence and energy, SAIL steel continues to play a pivotal role in building the nation.
Guided by the National Steel Policy
Shri Prakash reiterated the company’s alignment with the National Steel Policy 2017, which charts India’s path toward becoming a global steel leader. He noted that SAIL has entered the next phase of growth, where new projects will integrate:
-
Green technologies for decarbonisation
-
Efficient logistics systems to enhance supply chain reliability
-
Customer-centric solutions to improve services and competitiveness
“This journey will be anchored on technology, digitalization, sustainability, and above all, people,” he said.
Driving Sustainability: Green Steel Initiatives
With global industries at a turning point in the fight against climate change, SAIL is taking bold steps to accelerate its green steel transition. Shri Prakash detailed several initiatives underway:
-
Hydrogen-based steelmaking trials to reduce dependence on coal
-
Carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) for emissions reduction
-
Biochar injection to cut carbon intensity in blast furnaces
-
Renewable energy integration across operations to lower fossil fuel reliance
“Climate change is a defining challenge for our industry. The world is at the cusp of a green transition, and SAIL is determined to be at the forefront of this change,” Shri Prakash emphasized.
Digital and HR Transformation for a Future-Ready SAIL
To prepare for tomorrow’s challenges, SAIL has launched two transformative programmes:
-
PRAVARTANAM – a digital transformation initiative aimed at modernizing processes, leveraging automation, and using data-driven decision-making across plants and mines.
-
SAIL DARPAN – a human resources transformation project focused on empowering employees, enhancing productivity, and fostering a culture of innovation and inclusivity.
Both programmes are expected to strengthen the company’s operational efficiency while building a resilient and self-sustaining ecosystem.
Looking Ahead with Confidence
Concluding his remarks, Shri Prakash said: “SAIL is ready for tomorrow. I am confident that SAIL has the resilience, capability, and vision to emerge stronger and achieve greater heights.”
The 53rd AGM reaffirmed SAIL’s dual commitment to powering India’s growth and leading the industry’s green transition. With strong foundations, innovative initiatives, and a clear sustainability vision, SAIL is positioning itself as a critical player in shaping India’s industrial and environmental future.
