The gang rape of a 19-year-old Dalit college student in Puri, Odisha, has become a major political issue. Opposition parties BJD and Congress have accused the BJP government of failing to ensure women's safety. The incident, which occurred around noon on a Saturday, was reported after the victim lodged a complaint at the Puri Sadar police station.
The victim and her male companion were assaulted by two local youths in the Brahmagiri area. Police have arrested three individuals, including the prime suspects, Siba Sahoo and Manoj Sahoo alias Kalia. The alleged criminals have been charged under various sections of the BNS and the SC-ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
The incident has sparked statewide outrage, prompting the opposition's demand for accountability from the BJP government. BJD leader Naveen Patnaik criticized the administration's inability to ensure women's safety and called for immediate and strong action to restore confidence among women in Odisha.
