Turmoil in Muzaffarabad: Protests Turn Deadly in Kashmir
Protests in Pakistani-controlled Kashmir have resulted in eight deaths over four days, with the region in turmoil as communications and transport shut down. Demonstrators are opposing perks for officials while struggling with inadequate resources. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif calls for negotiations to resolve the clashes.

In a grave escalation of unrest, at least eight lives have been claimed in four days of protests in Pakistani-controlled Kashmir, according to local officials. The region, shrouded in silence with phone and internet services cut, saw violent demonstrations as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced a committee aimed at calming the situation.
Thousands have flooded Muzaffarabad, the regional capital, prompting a harsh government response. Riot police deployed tear gas to control the growing crowds while businesses, schools, and transport remain crippled since the protests erupted. The clashes have taken the lives of three police officers and five civilians, local sources corroborate.
The unrest is fueled by opposition to official privileges amidst shortages. The committee, including Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal, hopes for resolution through dialogue. Meanwhile, Kashmiri civil rights leader Shaukat Nawaz Mir criticizes lavish official lifestyles against public need. Previous protests led to Pakistan's financial grant meeting some demands after similar violent episodes.
