Madras High Court Revisits Minister's Wealth Disproportionate Assets Case

The Madras High Court on Monday issued a notice to the Tamil Nadu government concerning a petition by Water Resources Minister Duraimurugan. The petition disputes the jurisdiction of the Special Court currently handling a Rs 1.40 crore disproportionate wealth case against him.

Justice V. Lakshminarayanan has scheduled further hearings for October 23. Initially, the disproportionate assets case was lodged by the DVAC in 2011 against Duraimurugan and his wife, alleging accumulation of wealth beyond their known income while he served as PWD Minister during the DMK government from 2006 to 2011.

The couple was discharged from the case by the CJM court in Vellore in 2017. However, the DVAC filed a revision petition against this decision in the Madras High Court, which subsequently allowed it and instructed the trial court to expedite proceedings following a state government order transferring the case to a Special Court in Chennai.
