Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Shri Nitin Gadkari conducted an extensive review of National Highway projects in Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh, focusing on construction quality, maintenance standards, and monsoon preparedness. The high-level meetings were held in New Delhi following concerns and feedback received through media reports and social media platforms regarding highway conditions and ongoing infrastructure projects.
The review meetings were attended by Union Ministers of State Shri Ajay Tamta and Shri Harsh Malhotra, along with senior officials from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), project contractors, and technical experts involved in highway development and maintenance.
During the detailed assessment, Shri Gadkari reviewed National Highway stretches covering nearly 10,064 kilometres in Rajasthan and evaluated the status of highway projects spanning 1,947 kilometres in Himachal Pradesh. The discussions focused on project execution timelines, road quality, structural durability, maintenance mechanisms, and safety measures being implemented across key corridors.
The Union Minister underlined the importance of timely completion of highway projects, stressing that delays not only escalate project costs but also impact connectivity, logistics efficiency, and economic activity. He directed officials and contractors to ensure strict compliance with quality standards and engineering specifications at every stage of project implementation.
Shri Gadkari emphasised the need to adopt advanced construction technologies, modern engineering practices, and sustainable infrastructure solutions to create durable and efficient road networks capable of withstanding climatic and traffic challenges. According to him, India’s rapidly expanding highway infrastructure is playing a transformative role in improving regional connectivity, reducing travel time, boosting trade, and supporting industrial and tourism growth.
He stated that robust and well-maintained highway networks are essential for strengthening the country’s economic backbone and ensuring seamless movement of people and goods across states. The Minister also highlighted that infrastructure development remains one of the key drivers of India’s growth strategy and is central to the vision of building a modern and self-reliant economy.
Special emphasis was placed on monsoon preparedness during the review meetings, particularly in view of the challenges posed by heavy rainfall, landslides, waterlogging, and road damage in vulnerable regions. Shri Gadkari instructed officials to undertake comprehensive preventive measures to minimise disruptions and maintain commuter safety during the rainy season.
The Minister directed agencies to strengthen drainage systems, carry out slope protection works, improve water management infrastructure, and undertake proactive maintenance activities on highways prone to erosion and structural damage. He also called for the establishment of swift response mechanisms to address emergencies, road blockages, and weather-related incidents in a timely manner.
In Himachal Pradesh, where hilly terrain and heavy monsoon rains often create challenges for road infrastructure, the review focused on ensuring slope stabilisation, landslide mitigation, and long-term durability of highway assets. Officials discussed measures such as retaining walls, improved drainage channels, rockfall barriers, and modern geotechnical engineering techniques to enhance road safety and resilience.
For Rajasthan, discussions included highway maintenance, pavement quality, expansion of connectivity corridors, and measures to support rising traffic demands. The state’s strategic road infrastructure plays an important role in industrial transportation, tourism connectivity, freight movement, and regional economic integration.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has been aggressively expanding India’s highway infrastructure over the past several years under flagship initiatives such as Bharatmala Pariyojana and the National Infrastructure Pipeline. The government has increasingly focused not only on highway expansion but also on ensuring sustainability, safety, and long-term maintenance of road assets.
Officials noted that the use of advanced materials, digital monitoring systems, intelligent traffic management solutions, and modern construction technologies is becoming increasingly important in highway development projects across the country. The Ministry has also been encouraging the use of environmentally sustainable practices including waste material utilisation, green highways, and energy-efficient construction methods.
Shri Gadkari reiterated that public feedback received through media and social media platforms is being taken seriously to improve accountability, transparency, and responsiveness in infrastructure development. He said citizen participation and real-time reporting help authorities identify issues quickly and improve project monitoring mechanisms.
The review meetings reflected the government’s broader commitment to building high-quality, resilient, and future-ready transport infrastructure capable of supporting India’s economic ambitions and improving everyday travel experiences for millions of citizens.
