Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren on Monday directed officials to ensure transparency in the mining sector, crack down on illegal mining and promote the use of modern technology.

Soren gave the directions while reviewing the progress of the finance and commercial tax departments during a meeting, officials said.

''Discussions were held on the state's financial situation, revenue collection, effective implementation of budget provisions and other related topics. Several suggestions were given to the departments regarding necessary reforms to increase finance and revenue, including the use of technology,'' the chief minister said in a post on X.

Officials informed the CM that the state's mining revenue was in a better position compared to Odisha and Chhattisgarh due to systematic management of mineral resources, a transparent policy framework and an effective monitoring system, according to an official statement.

Appreciating the progress, Soren stressed transparency in the mining sector, strict action against illegal mining and adoption of modern technologies, it said.

He also emphasised the implementation of a biometric system in offices to ensure accountability and improve transparency in administrative functioning.

During the review of the commercial tax department, the chief minister assessed the status of tax collection, GST compliance, measures for revenue growth and the department's overall functioning.

The statement said that during the meeting, emphasis was laid on tax assessment, recovery, monitoring and enforcement.

Reviewing the water resources department, the CM directed officials to ensure effective efforts to supply water to the fields.

''There should be no water shortage for farming under any circumstances. The successful implementation of irrigation schemes will increase farmers' income and give a new boost to the agricultural sector,'' the CM said.

Soren also conducted a detailed review of the progress of Son-Kanhar Pipeline Irrigation Scheme, Siktiya, Maslia-Ranishwar, Pirtaand Mega Lift Irrigation schemes, Palamu Pipeline Irrigation Scheme (Package-1 and 2), Bhimkhanda Micro Lift Scheme, Kharkai Boyi Mega Lift Scheme, Bhairwa Reservoir, Konar Irrigation Project, Punasi Reservoir, and Gumani Barrage Scheme.

''In a meeting of the schemes of the water resources department in Ranchi, a detailed review was conducted on the progress of various irrigation schemes, lift irrigation projects, ensuring drinking water supply through pipelines, and other such works, and officials were directed to utilise new technologies more effectively to complete the irrigation projects as soon as possible while maintaining quality,'' Soren said on X.

He added, ''In the coming times, through revolution in these irrigation projects, we will provide irrigation facilities to our hardworking farmers of the state, which will also lead to an increase in their livelihoods.''
