High Court Approves Bail for Man Accused of Defamatory Posts Against Modi

The Allahabad High Court has permitted the release on bail of Tahir Mewati, a year-long detainee accused of disparaging India and Narendra Modi through Facebook posts.

Justice Rajiv Lochan Shukla decided the bail plea, acknowledging the severe nature of the accusations but emphasizing the indefinite nature of pre-trial detention. Mewati's counsel argued his wrongful implication, pointing to jail time since May 2025. The prosecution alleged Mewati's connection through digital evidence, though Mewati's defense claimed a fabricated account was used to undermine him. The court ruled on the basis of Article 21, recognizing the applicant's constitutional rights in making its decision.
