US Reaffirms Pacific Security Commitment Amid Eased Rhetoric on China

US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, addressing the Shangri-La defence summit in Singapore, reaffirmed Washington's dedication to Pacific security. While his previous alarmist remarks about China were moderated, he emphasized the strategic importance of maintaining a balanced power alignment in the region.

In light of recent diplomatic engagements between the US and China, Hegseth highlighted both nations' commitment to a stable and constructive relationship. Despite improved bilateral ties, he clarified that the US would continue to oppose any dominance by Beijing in the Indo-Pacific.

Further, Hegseth underscored the critical need for allied countries to bolster their defence spending, identifying partners in Asia who are making commendable efforts. He also revealed a new AUKUS initiative focusing on enhancing undersea drone capabilities, highlighting the collective security efforts of the US, UK, and Australia.

Despite growing China-US cooperation, Hegseth assured that America's strategic policies toward Taiwan and broader regional objectives would remain consistent, emphasizing the enduring commitment to allies in maintaining a balance of power in the Pacific.
