AAP MLA Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra has been granted regular bail by the Punjab and Haryana High Court in connection with a rape case filed last year. The court mandated that he surrender his passport and check in with the local police station twice monthly.
Pathanmajra, representing Sanour, Patiala, was apprehended in March following a period on the run after escaping police custody in Haryana. The accusations, originating from a woman who claimed he deceived her about his marital status, involve charges of rape, cheating, and criminal intimidation.
The court remarked that the lengthy relationship between the parties raises questions about the complainant's awareness of Pathanmajra's marital status. Additionally, Pathanmajra's prior evasion does not preclude bail, especially as subsequent threat allegations were unsubstantiated by evidence.
The court concluded that despite previous abscondence, the considerations of the case do not warrant denying bail, instructing his release on conditions including bond submission and passport relinquishment.
