An estimated 80 lakh women in Maharashtra have been removed from the Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin scheme following an e-KYC deadline, leading to accusations from opposition parties that the state government is facing a financial crunch.

A government official clarified that the eligibility reduction from 2.4 crore to 1.7 crore is due to both e-KYC non-compliance and various other criteria failures. While opponents argue this move reflects fiscal difficulties, the government provided an eight-month window for completing e-KYC, citing income limits, age, and participation in another scheme as factors for disqualification.

Opposition leaders, such as Jayant Patil and Rohit Pawar, allege political motivations behind the eligibility reassessments, suggesting it served as a pre-election strategy. They call into question the government's planning and execution, warning that further exclusions could lead to public backlash.
