Mali's Political Climate: A Nation on Pause
Mali has halted political activities ahead of a protest against the ruling military junta. Political parties are calling for a return to constitutional order. A recent national conference suggested extending the junta leader's role, sparking debate and demonstrations. Mali also formed a regional alliance.

Mali has put political activities on hold before a protest against the military junta, which has been in control since the coups of 2020 and 2021, as confirmed by authorities on Wednesday.
Political parties in the West African nation are urging a return to constitutional order and a presidential election. They aimed for a mass demonstration on Friday. However, the junta announced on state television that all political activities are suspended until further notice, citing the need to maintain public order.
A recent conference of political figures proposed naming junta leader Assimi Goita as president with a five-year term and suggested disbanding all political parties. This move sparked opposition from a coalition of political parties, who demonstrated on May 3, arguing that public sentiment was not reflected. Political parties planned to reconvene on Friday.
