A petition for the release of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan was submitted to a court on Friday amidst concerns of a potential drone attack on the prison where he is detained. The move comes amid escalating tensions between Pakistan and India.
Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf, Khan's political party, announced via a WhatsApp message that the Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Ali Amin Gandapur, had approached the Islamabad High Court to seek Khan's release. Khan, 72, is currently held in Adiala Jail in the city of Rawalpindi.
The petition argues for Khan's immediate release on parole or probation, citing the current tense situation with India and potential drone threats as reasons for national unity and safety. The court has yet to schedule a hearing for the case.
