West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee intensified her criticism of Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday. She questioned his authority to issue NRC notices to legitimate citizens of Bengal and demanded an immediate cessation of these actions, which she deemed beyond his jurisdiction.
Banerjee used the case of Uttam Kumar Brajabashi, a resident of Cooch Behar, to exemplify her grievances during the Martyrs' Day rally, presenting him to a massive crowd of TMC supporters. Brajabashi had been served an NRC notice by the Assam government, challenging his citizenship despite residing in West Bengal for five decades.
Without naming Sarma directly, Banerjee condemned the Assam government's actions as arrogant and pledged political consequences in Assam should the persecution persist. She vowed to mobilize resistance in Assam, asserting the state's overreach in Bengal's affairs.
