In a significant showdown, several Members of Parliament from the INDIA bloc, including prominent figures like Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge and Sonia Gandhi, protested vehemently in the Parliament House complex on Monday. The focal point of their dissent is the Election Commission's contentious voter roll revision in Bihar, referred to as the Special Intensive Revision (SIR).
Top opposition leaders, such as Sonia Gandhi, Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and representatives from the Samajwadi Party and TMC, among others, demonstrated against the SIR exercise. Holding banners stating 'SIR - Attack on Democracy,' they lined the steps of Parliament's Makar Dwar, marking the fifth day of continuous protests.
The opposition claims that the SIR is aimed at disenfranchising Bihar's voters ahead of upcoming Assembly elections. Amid mounting tension, Kharge declared the INDIA bloc's resolve to protect democratic rights, criticizing SIR as an attempt to undermine democracy and the Constitution. Protests persisted with demands for a parliamentary debate on the issue.
