The Mundakkai-Chooralmala region of Wayanad is once again under threat as heavy rain over the past 24 hours has elevated fears of fresh flooding and landslides. This comes just a year after devastating landslides claimed more than 200 lives in the area.
District officials sounded the alarm on Wednesday, noting that the Chooralmala river is in strong spate, with turbulent, muddy waters spilling over the banks near the Bailey bridge. Soil previously stored along the riverbanks for renovation has been washed away, flooding nearby roads and communities.
Local residents suspect new landslides in forested hills near Punchirimattam, although no confirmation has come from the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA). Remembering the disastrous events of July 2024, residents remain anxious even as officials downplay immediate danger, citing district-wide monitoring efforts and meteorological warnings.
