Afghanistan's Call for Inclusion in Global Climate Talks Amid Environmental Struggles

Afghanistan's highest environmental authority has made a strong petition for the country's participation in upcoming UN climate discussions, highlighting the devastating effects of climate change on its citizens and economy. With severe weather conditions and dwindling water resources, the call underscores an urgent need for international attention.

Last year's COP29 climate summit in Azerbaijan saw a Taliban delegation attending as observers. Matiul Haq Khalis, leading Afghanistan's National Environmental Protection Agency, emphasized that the halting of environmental projects following the Taliban's 2021 takeover had largely exacerbated the situation. Khalis aims for inclusion in the COP30 talks in Brazil, despite only Russia currently recognizing the Taliban-led government.

Despite Afghanistan's minimal role in contributing to global climate change, it endures significant hardship from its repercussions. Severe droughts, diminished arable land, and looming threats to food security demand Afghanistan's presence on global platforms like COP30. Khalis also noted the nation's untapped potential for renewable energy, contingent on international assistance.
