The Meghalaya government has taken a significant step toward improving regional infrastructure by launching the land acquisition process for a new high-speed corridor. This ambitious project, with an estimated cost of Rs 22,864 crore, will stretch from Umiam Lake near Shillong to Silchar in Assam, officials announced on Tuesday.
The four-lane greenfield highway, spanning 166.80 kilometers, is designed to enhance connectivity and foster economic growth in the region, particularly passing through Meghalaya's Ri-Bhoi district. The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) will spearhead the construction of this pivotal project.
Ri-Bhoi's Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal has issued a notification advising residents against any new constructions in the designated area without his office's authorization. The notice also underscores that unauthorized structures will not be eligible for compensation during land acquisition. The corridor will traverse 17 villages, including sites like Pyllun and Lumsohphoh.
