Indonesian Communities Reflect on 20 Years Since Devastating Mud Volcano Eruption

Residents of East Java in Indonesia commemorated the 20th anniversary of the Lusi mud volcano eruption by gathering at the site to honor the 14 lives lost and the communities drowned in mud. The calamity has forced tens of thousands from their homes.

Scientific investigations indicate the eruption was likely caused by commercial drilling activities. Despite efforts to contain it, the volcano remains active. Displaced residents like Sastro have had to adapt to new livelihoods, with some areas becoming unlikely tourist destinations.

The incident triggered significant compensation claims against PT Lapindo Brantas, the company drilling for gas at the time. Even after two decades, challenges such as environmental damage and health impacts continue to affect survivors, prompting calls for a shift away from extractive industries.
