Sébastien Haller's journey with Borussia Dortmund ended on Monday as the striker transferred to Dutch club Utrecht.
His tenure with the German club, overshadowed by a cancer diagnosis, saw Haller come close to winning the Bundesliga, reach a Champions League final, and capture the Africa Cup of Nations with Ivory Coast. Despite accomplishments, he gradually found himself sidelined, spending last season on loan.
"Sébastien has written a special story here," noted Dortmund's sporting director Sebastian Kehl. After a tough start at Dortmund due to a testicular tumor diagnosis, Haller returned to the field six months post-surgery and chemotherapy. His nine pivotal Bundesliga goals in 2022-23 almost secured the club a league title. Injuries and form issues limited him in the Champions League final against Real Madrid, his last game for Dortmund, before going on loan to Leganes and Utrecht.
Haller's move back to Utrecht offers a fresh start where he once thrived, scoring six times in 18 appearances last season, aiding in their bid for European competition.
