Heineken has lost operational control and evacuated its staff from its facilities in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo due to escalating conflict, the Dutch brewing giant announced on Friday. The company's operations had been suspended since March after attacks on its breweries and depots amid clashes between the military and rebel forces.

On Friday, further deterioration of the situation led to armed groups seizing control of Heineken's facilities in Bukavu and Goma—eastern Congo's major cities. "As of June 12, 2025, we no longer have operational control," said Heineken, highlighting the absence of safe working conditions.

While Heineken's local unit, Bralima, continues operations in regions of Congo unaffected by conflict, the company maintains financial support for evacuated employees. Eastern Congo's instability, marked by the M23 rebel group's rapid advance, has spurred accusations of Rwandan involvement, which Rwanda denies. Diplomatic efforts are ongoing for a peace agreement.
