Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed gratitude Monday towards the Supreme Court for admonishing senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his remarks about the Indian Army during the Bharat Jodo Yatra in December 2022. 'People holding high positions should refrain from making baseless comments against national interest,' Fadnavis stated.
He criticized Gandhi for purportedly undermining the morale of soldiers by echoing narratives akin to those from Pakistan and China. Fadnavis suggested that the Supreme Court's intervention might prompt Gandhi to amend his stance. The Court had taken exception to Gandhi's statements following a 2022 skirmish between Indian and Chinese forces in Arunachal Pradesh.
Justices Dipankar Datta and Augustine George Masih took a firm stance, questioning the veracity of Gandhi's claims regarding Chinese territorial occupation. Concurrently, the apex court stayed trial court proceedings against Gandhi, who faces a defamation complaint filed by Uday Shankar Srivastava, alleging Gandhi's remarks were demoralizing for the Indian Army.
