The Chief Justice of India (CJI), BR Gavai, has publicly addressed the recent social media backlash concerning his remarks during the dismissal of a plea aimed at restoring a damaged Lord Vishnu statue in the Javari temple, Khajuraho. The CJI reaffirmed his respect for all faiths during the Supreme Court's session on Thursday.

Highlighting the escalating reaction to the controversy, Solicitor General of India (SGI) Tushar Mehta vouched for CJI Gavai's inclusive approach, having witnessed his visits to various religious sites over the past decade. Mehta criticized the social media tendency to amplify issues out of proportion. Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal echoed this sentiment, noting that legal professionals suffer from the misrepresentation of facts online.

CJI Gavai recalled similar online backlash to his remarks on Nepal, stressing the negative effects of misinformation on social platforms. Justice K Vinod Chandran, part of the bench with Gavai, labeled these platforms as 'anti-social media,' sharing his experiences with online misjudgment. Senior Advocate Sanjay Nuli confirmed that CJI Gavai did not make any misleading statements, defending his actual comments. The Supreme Court concluded that the restoration matter should be under the jurisdiction of the Archaeological Survey of India, as it concerns a protected monument. (ANI)
