In the historically tumultuous village of Puvarti in Chhattisgarh's Sukma district, where gunfights and the threat of landmines were once a part of everyday life, elderly residents are finding newfound hope. After a concerted healthcare push following the state's declaration of the region as Naxalism-free in March 2026, villagers are benefiting from cataract surgeries through the Mukhyamantri Swasth Bastar Abhiyan.
Sukma Collector Amit Kumar highlighted the comprehensive focus on treating prevalent diseases like cataract, tuberculosis, and malaria among others. 'The goal is to identify cataract patients and facilitate their surgeries to restore vision,' Kumar stated. He noted significant progress, with hundreds of surgeries completed, and reinforced the commitment to expanding medical access further in the Bastar region.
The patient's experience showcases the program's success. Beneficiaries, now able to see their families and surroundings distinctly, describe this opportunity as a rebirth. Chief Medical and Health Officer Dr. R.K. Singh remarked on the impact of bringing healthcare services to remote villagers, highlighting the critical role of local language support in encouraging treatment uptake. Community gratitude echoes towards government efforts, particularly under the leadership of Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai.
