In a show of defiance and desperation, hundreds of jobless school teachers and state government employees took to the streets of Howrah on Monday, a day marked by fervent calls for reinstatement and increased dearness allowance (DA).
Bearing placards and a replica of the West Bengal state secretariat 'Nabanna', members of the Sangrami Joutho Manch pushed forward, unyielding, despite police barricades erected at Foreshore Road to limit their advance.
Manch convenor Ashis Khamrui highlighted critical demands, focusing on the reinstatement of 26,000 teachers impacted by a Supreme Court order and immediate recruitment for primary to upper primary levels.
The protests also aired grievances about the state's failure to increase DA, as mandated by the Supreme Court.
Protestors remained firm in their resolve, with tension simmering as senior police officers sought to quell the unrest, warning that Calcutta High Court directives barred the rally without hindering everyday commerce.
The spirited demonstration provided a vivid snapshot of ongoing discord between the state government and its employees.
