The Allahabad High Court has granted a temporary reprieve to former Congress MLA Ajai Rai by staying proceedings in a 2017 case under section 144 of the CrPC.

Justice Sameer Jain issued the stay order on Monday following a petition by Rai, who challenged the summons and the charge sheet filed against him.

In his defense, Rai requested the quashing of both the summons dated September 9, 2019, and the charge sheet from November 7, 2017. The matter relates to charges of disobedience under section 188 of the IPC, filed in Varanasi. The court has scheduled the next hearing for August 5 and has paused further proceedings.
