Punjab farmers clashed with Chandigarh police on Friday as they attempted to march towards Lok Bhavan without the necessary permissions from authorities. The demonstration aimed to present demands, including the resolution of the river water dispute, to Punjab Governor and Chandigarh Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria.
Authorities permitted only 32 representatives from farmers' unions to meet with the Governor, but a larger group sought to join the march, leading to tensions at the Mohali-Chandigarh border. The police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse the crowd, briefly detaining several protesters.
The farmers, under the Samyukt Kissan Morcha banner, demanded a legal guarantee for MSP and the repeal of certain contentious provisions. As injuries were reported on both sides, farmer leaders planned further protests, including burning effigies and strategizing future actions.
