BJP leader CR Kesavan issued a sharp rebuke to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday, questioning his decision to avoid filing an affidavit under oath to back his allegations against the Election Commission. Kesavan responded to remarks by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, accusing Gandhi of indulging in 'cheap drama and theatrics' instead of adhering to legal procedures.
Speaking with ANI, Kesavan voiced concerns over the persistent doubts and suspicions regarding Gandhi's avoidance of legal protocols. 'The people are questioning why Rahul Gandhi dodges filing an affidavit to substantiate his claims, as per the law,' he remarked. Kesavan emphasized the importance of obeying the law, referencing Rahul and Sonia Gandhi's adherence to the constitution.
Drawing on historical parallels, Kesavan recounted the election fraud case involving Indira Gandhi in 1975 and alleged election rigging in Rajiv Gandhi's constituency in 1989. 'This is the history,' he asserted. Kesavan warned that not filing the affidavit would reveal Gandhi's 'bankruptcy' and lack of integrity, calling for an apology if he refuses to sign.
Earlier, CEC Gyanesh Kumar refuted Rahul Gandhi's recent 'vote theft' claims against the Election Commission, urging Gandhi to submit a signed affidavit or apologize. 'There is no third option,' Kumar declared, requesting the affidavit within seven days to prove the allegations are unfounded. Meanwhile, Gandhi criticized the CEC for allegedly not seeking an affidavit from BJP MP Anurag Thakur for similar remarks.
