The fledgling TVK government in Tamil Nadu successfully navigated a significant political challenge on Wednesday by securing a decisive victory in the state assembly's trust vote. With a 144:22 majority, the win was bolstered by 25 AIADMK MLAs defying party lines to support the CM C Joseph Vijay-led administration.
Despite allegations of horse-trading, Vijay received backing from Congress, VCK, the Left, and IUML, alongside expelled AMMK MLA S Kamaraj. The opposition DMK staged a walkout during the proceedings, with leader Udhayanidhi Stalin criticizing the TVK's mandate and questioning its viability despite its recent success.
AIADMK's internal discord became evident as the Velumani-Shanmugam faction supported the TVK government, counter to leadership directives. Shanmugam defended the decision, emphasising shared ideological goals against the DMK. Controversy over possible political incentives caused tensions to rise across party lines, suggesting a turbulent political climate ahead.
