Kerala Announces 52-Day Trawling Ban to Protect Marine Life

Kerala is set to enforce its annual trawling ban for 52 days starting from June 9. This initiative, stretching until the end of July, is geared towards preserving marine life during the monsoon breeding period, a crucial time when many marine species reproduce.

The Fisheries Department emphasizes that the restrictions are essential to prevent harm to fish eggs and the immature marine population, often threatened by trawling activities. Traditional fishermen will maintain their rights to fish on the surface waters throughout the ban duration.

The state has strengthened its enforcement mechanisms with 24/7 control rooms and recruited private boats for patrolling the seas. Plans include hiring trained youth for maritime safety and collaborating with civil supplies to support affected workers with food provisions. Meetings with district authorities aim to ensure compliance.

To bolster enforcement, district-level meetings spearheaded by District Collectors will focus on seamless execution, including regulating diesel supply at harbors and ensuring non-compliance is addressed with strict measures. The Indian Navy and Coast Guard stand ready to assist in ensuring maritime safety.
