In a significant political development, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge declared on Tuesday that retired Supreme Court judge B Sudershan Reddy will be the joint opposition candidate for the upcoming Vice Presidential election. This consensus among the opposition parties is being hailed as a profound democratic achievement.

Kharge emphasized the importance of this decision at a press conference, highlighting the unity among the opposition in their stand against what they perceive as injustices threatening democracy and the Constitution. He remarked that Reddy, known for his progressive jurisprudence, embodies the principles that were foundational to India's freedom movement.

The INDIA bloc, including the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), is rallying behind Reddy, describing the election as an ideological battle against the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Reddy's candidacy is a push to uphold constitutional values, with his nomination filing set for August 21, aiming to face off against NDA's CP Radhakrishnan on September 9.
