Tensions Erupt at Columbia University: Pro-Palestinian Protest Sparks Police Intervention

Police officers, donning helmets, surged into Columbia University on Wednesday evening to disperse a group of masked protestors who had initiated a pro-Palestinian demonstration within the institution's primary library premises.

Social media footage showcased a large contingent of NYPD officers entering the library after the protestors bypassed campus security, draping Palestinian flags and banners over bookshelves. The slogan 'Columbia will burn' was reportedly etched on several framed artworks.

Columbia's president, Claire Shipman, clarified that law enforcement was called to ensure the safety and security of the campus after protestors rebuffed requests to identify themselves and vacate the premises. The event coincided with the US Justice Department's announcement of hate-crime charges against a man linked to past pro-Palestinian protests.
