The Shimla police have taken legal action against an individual named Ranbir, charging him with defamation and forgery. This comes after sanjay Awasthi, a Congress MLA, lodged a formal complaint accusing Ranbir of disseminating misleading and defamatory content through a social media platform.

Awasthi, representing the Arki Assembly seat, claims that a Facebook post authored by Ranbir included a photograph and a caption that not only insulted him but also infringed on his privacy. The police confirmed these allegations on Thursday.

The accused faces multiple charges, encompassing forgery, intentional insult, and defamation under sections 336(4), 356(2), and 352 of the BNS. Additionally, Ranbir's actions have been deemed a violation of privacy and identity theft under Sections 66(C) and (E) of the Information Technology Act.
